Zeeland East High School and Zeeland West High School Scholarships

Dr. Tai Afrik Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating high school seniors or alumni from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland, Holland Christian, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, Zeeland West or the Careerline Tech Center

2. Minority status

3. Enrolling or enrolled at Grand Valley State University

4. Majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM)

5. 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA

Marnie Assink Art Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School or Zeeland West High School

2. Majoring in art at any accredited college, university or vocational/technical school in the United States

3. One of the two required recommendations must come from the applicant's high school art teacher.

1. Recommendation from applicant's high school art teacher

Batts Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland, Holland Christian, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West 

2. Ranked in the top 20 percent of graduating class

3. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Record of community activities and leadership positions in extra-curricular activities

3. Promise of outstanding leadership in the future

4. Financial need

5. Participation in Boys and Girls Club is preferred


Beal Family LAUP Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for three additional years.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Calvary Schools of Holland, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Ethnic minority, preferably of Hispanic origin

3. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Selection Criteria:

1. Quality of personal statement and interview

2. Financial need

3. School/community involvement

J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. College or college-bound student employed (or with a parent or grandparent employed) with Russ' Restaurants (Holland, Muskegon, Grand Haven, and Grand Rapids).

2. Enrolled or enrolling in a college or university in Michigan

3. 2.0 cumulative GPA minimum

Careerline Tech Center Scholarships

Careerline Tech Center Scholarships are given to students who have excelled in their coursework at the tech center and are interested in pursuing a higher education.

Applications are available through the Careerline Tech Center.


Centennial Coatings Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East or Zeeland West High Schools

2. First generation college student

3. Planning to enroll in a two or four-year accredited college or university or vocational/technical school

4. 3.0 cumulative GPA minimum

Jessie F. Dalman Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating young women from the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Hudsonville, Hudsonville Unity, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West.

2. Planning to attend a four-year accredited college or university

3. 3.5 cumulative GPA minimum, top 10 percent class rank, and an SAT score of 1340 or above

Lillian Mulder Dalman Scholarship for Resthaven Employees

Eligibility Criteria:

1. An active Resthaven Care Community employee in good standing for a minimum of one year

2. Planning to pursue continued education full or part-time through a school, college, university, or licensed training program

1. Essay stating professional goals

2. Recommendation by a supervisor that speaks to the employee’s quality of care

Thomas and Susan Den Herder Education Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for three additional years.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating Zeeland East High School or Zeeland West High School senior

2. Enrolling in a four-year accredited college or university to pursue a degree in special education, elementary education or secondary education OR enrolling in a two-year college with a plan to transfer to a four-year accredited college or university to pursue a degree in special education, elementary education or secondary education

3. 3.2 cumulative GPA minimum

John C. DeWitt Scholarship

The John C. DeWitt Scholarship Fund was established in honor of John DeWitt, the world's greatest CHIX fan. The scholarship recognizes and financially assists the Johnny DeWitt Spirt Award winners from Zeeland East High School. Students do not need to apply for this scholarship.


Jack and Marlies DeWitt Scholarship

The Jack and Marlies DeWitt Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Jack's love of his hometown, Zeeland, Michigan, and of his alma mater, Hope College.  The annual scholarship award will recognize and financially assist the top-ranked Graduating from Zeeland East High School who will attend Hope College. Students do not need to apply for this scholarship.


Justin (Jup) Elhart Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for one additional year.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School

2. Enrolling in a two or four-year degree program at an accredited college or university

3. 2.0 cumulative GPA minimum

Selection Criteria:

1. Improvements academically and in personal traits over the course of high school

2. Caring attitude for others

3. High level of involvement in community, school or work

Pamela Elhart Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School or Zeeland West High School

Fifth Third Bank Minority Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from the following high schools: Black River, Holland Public, Holland Christian, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. First generation college student

3. Racial or ethnic minority status

4. 2.5 cumulative GPA minimum

Franz Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating homeschool student residing within the school district of Holland, West Ottawa or Zeeland or Graduating from one of the following schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West.

2. From a family with an internationally adopted child or children.  Applicants do not necessarily have to be adopted themselves but must have at least one sibling who is internationally adopted.

3. Accepted to a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school.

1. Academic achievement

2. Involvement in community and extracurricular activities

3. Leadership ability

C. Norman Fry Scholarship

Past C. Norman Fry Scholarship winners may reapply for the scholarship up to three times.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating high school senior or current Hillsdale College student from the following schools: Black River, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Accepted and enrolling at Hillsdale College

Selection Criteria:

1. Citizenship as demonstrated in the record of activities

2. Citizenship as demonstrated in the standard essay

3. Citizenship as demonstrated in recommendations

4. Preference will be given to English majors with a journalism emphasis


Haworth Skilled Trades Scholarship

The Haworth Skilled Trades Scholarship is open to the public. 


Holland Doctors of Audiology Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating or previous graduate of one of the following high schools: Allegan, Black River, Hamilton, Holland, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Graduate-level candidates must be hard of hearing and hearing aid users and/or admitted and enrolling in an accredited program in audiology or currently enrolled in an accredited program in audiology.

3. Undergraduate-level candidates must be hard of hearing and hearing aid users and/or interested in studying audiology or hearing science.

4. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Holland Friends of Art Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, Zeeland West or the Careerline Tech Center.

2. 2.5 cumulative GPA minimum 

3. Planning to study the visual arts

4. Extra-curricular art activities

Holland/Zeeland Promise Scholarship

The Holland/Zeeland Promise Scholarship was created to assist students who might not otherwise be financially able to pursue a college education in earning their bachelor's degree.  The scholarship seeks to ensure that recipients have the resources they need to fulfill their dream of a college education and graduate as free of debt as possible.  Selection is based on a range of factors including:

1. Financial need

2. Strong recommendation of an Upward Bound, Boys and Girls Club, or LAUP Adelante staff member based on the student’s involvement in one of these four organizations

3. Students’ demonstration of promise and motivation to achieve the goal of a college degree

4. Applicants should be graduating from greater Holland/Zeeland area high schools or current full-time college students who graduated from an area high school.

Integrated Fabric Resources, Inc. Employee Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating high school senior or current college student

2. Dependent of an Integrated Fabric Resources, Inc. employee

3. Accepted to or currently attending a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school

Kaminski Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Accepted and intending to enroll in college or trade school

3.  Recommended by a mentor or counselor at one of the following organizations: Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland, Barnabas Ministries, Urban Youth Ministries, Children’s Advocacy Center, Escape Ministries, Kids Hope USA or Women in Transition

Selection Criteria:

1. Strong desire to attempt post-secondary education as shown in the standard scholarship essay

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School

2. One of the two required recommendations must come from the English and/or Communications Department

2. Level of involvement in speech, drama, debate and/or English classes in high school

3. One male and one female recipient will be selected


Gene Kraai Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School or Zeeland West High School

2. Participation for at least three years in any single sport having earned a varsity letter

1. Demonstration of growth in athletic performances

2. Caring attitude toward students and staff


Charles and Beatrice Kulier Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West 

2. Planning to enroll in a two or four-year accredited college or university or vocational/technical school

Latin Americans United for Progress Dream Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating senior of Hispanic origin from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

1. Academic achievement as measured by the student’s GPA

Samuel Meengs Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Calvary Schools of Holland, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, or Zeeland East or Zeeland West.

2. Accepted and enrolling at Hope College

3. 4.0 cumulative GPA minimum and SAT score of at least 1280

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Strength of course load

3. A record of community service and extra-curricular activities

4. Involvement in high school sports, music, or the arts

 


Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. A graduating high school senior

2. An active participant in good standing with MLA for the immediately preceding two years, at minimum. A swimmer or his/her family must have fulfilled all of MLA’s volunteer requirements.

3. Accepted and planning to continue his/her studies at any post-secondary institution

An application is not necessary for this scholarship. Rather, eligible swimmers will be notified via a mailing to their homes and invited to submit proof of volunteer hours and reflection letters.


Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship

The Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship Fund was established in early 2009 coinciding with Larry Mulder’s retirement from ODL, Inc. (a Mulder family business) after 45 years of service. Karen and Larry wanted to assist in providing educational opportunities for the children of ODL’s employees. The awards are intended to assist children of eligible employees of ODL, Inc who are well-qualified students who will be pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree.

The Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship Fund is administered by the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. All applications are reviewed and selected by their appointed scholarship committee.

The scholarship awards may be used toward tuition, books, required expenses and fees. The number of scholarships awarded each year is based on funding availability. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of up to $7,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years while working towards an under-graduate degree and maintaining a 2.5 GPA.

1. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen accepted to an accredited college/university in the U.S.

2. Award recipients must be under the age of 25 and meet the criteria to qualify for dependent benefits through an ODL eligible employee.

3. An ODL eligible employee is an individual who is currently employed by ODL at a U.S. facility and has held a regular job with the company for one year, or more, and completed 1,500 hours in the previous 12 months. Children of officers and directors of the company are not eligible.

4. Scholarships are limited to students pursuing an undergraduate degree.

5. Applicant must have an acceptance letter from the college they plan to attend.

6. Applicants, who are high school seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or applicants who are current college students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 are encouraged to apply for scholarship funding.

 


Neydon Scholarship for the Children of Widows

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Child of a widowed mother

3. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Selection Criteria:

1. Admirable character recognized by teachers or counselors within the high school and community organizations

2. Financial need

3. Preference will be given to those students who are not selected to receive other types of scholarships, particularly full scholarships


Herbert F. and Mabel L. Olney Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for three additional years.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School for Zeeland West High School

2. Enrolling in a two or four-year nursing or law enforcement program in Michigan

Ruth Westerman Oren Nursing Scholarship

Past recipients of the Ruth Westerman Oren Nursing Scholarship are encouraged to reapply.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Recent graduate of an Ottawa County high school or technical school or Ottawa County adult residents making a career transition to nursing

2. Pursuing a nursing degree to become a Registered Nurse (RN) through an accredited nursing program

1. Passion and heart for nursing as shown in activities

2. Passion and heart for nursing as shown in standard essay

3. Passion and heart for nursing as shown in recommendations

4. Priority given to past recipients who have a strong performance record in their nursing studies

 


Grace Piersma Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Public, Holland Christian, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Enrolling at Hope College

3. Planning to major in dance, music, athletic training, business or a major that is closely related to any of these (for example: management, economics or kinesiology)

Ann Query Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Residing within the Zeeland Public School District. Students do not have to attend Zeeland Public Schools in order to be eligible. 

2. Accepted to a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school in Michigan, preferably a four-year college/university

3. Planning to pursue a degree in business or education

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Calvary Schools of Holland, Fennville, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Accepted and enrolling at the University of Michigan

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement as measured by the student's GPA and ACT or SAT scores

2. Leadership and service to area high school

3. 300 word or less response to this prompt: Please explain why the University of Michigan is your first choice and discuss your educational goals and intended major.


Benjamin H. Van Andel Promise of Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Enrolling at any two or four-year accredited post-secondary college, university or vocational/technical school

3. One of the two required recommendations should be from the primary instructor in one's area of giftedness. For example, a singer would ask his/her voice instructor for a recommendation and an outstanding leader might ask his/her student council adviser.

Selection Criteria:

1. Recommendations

2. Evidence of the ability to succeed at college-level work as well as the focus and specialized work ethic needed to excel in his or/her professional field.

3. Answers to questions in an additional 300 word or less essay: How did you select your intended field of study? How have you cultivated your abilities to prepare for success in that field? Why is the post-secondary institution you have selected the best place for you to develop your abilities?


Jack W. and Michael W. Van Dyke Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for one additional year.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School or Zeeland West High School

2. Accepted and enrolling in a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school

3. Planning to pursue a degree or certification in a technical field or computer science

4. One of the two recommendations must be from someone at the student’s school or another learning environment such as Careerline Tech, and the second must be from someone outside of the applicant’s school experience, who is not related to the applicant.

5. All GPAs and standardized test scores will be considered.

Selection Criteria:

1. Recommendations

2. Brief written response to both of the following questions: a. What struggle, challenge, loss, or adversity have you faced or are presently working through and how has it shaped the person you are? b. Those who knew them well described Jack and Mike as self-learners with analytical minds, who each overcame adversity as they found success. Both Jack and Mike were gifted with technical abilities that were expressed in the diesel mechanic and computer science fields, respectively. How do you feel you reflect the spirit of these two individuals for whom the scholarship was established?

Angie Van Hoven Nursing Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Zeeland Public School District resident and Graduating from one of the following high schools: Holland Christian, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Intending to pursue a post-secondary degree in nursing

Ted Vanden Bosch Scholarship for the Children of Police Officers, Firefighters and Rescue Personnel

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from a greater Holland/Zeeland high school, including: Black River, Fennville, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Child of a firefighter, police officer, or rescue personnel

3. 3.0 cumulative GPA minimum

4. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Record of community service in addition to leadership positions in extra-curricular activities

3. Financial need

4. Special consideration will be given to candidates interested in pursuing a degree in the sciences


Van’t Hof Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for one additional year.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating high school senior from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Enrolling at Hope College or Calvin College.

3. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

3. Response to standard essay question


Wagner Catholic Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for three additional years.

Eligibility Criteria:

1.Graduating senior who resides in the service area of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area and is a member of one of the two local Roman Catholic Churches: Our Lady of the Lake or St. Francis de Sales.

2. Pursuing a degree from a Roman Catholic college or university.  In addition, consideration will be given to students considering Hope College or University of Michigan.

Selection Criteria:

1. High academic performance as demonstrated by high school GPA rank in class and national test scores

2. Exceptional leadership in high school activities within the limits of employment requirements

3. High service record in church and community

4. Promise of outstanding leadership and scholarship

5. Financial need is a consideration, but not an absolute requirement. Applicants are encouraged to supply the page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount.


Catherine Bosch Wasson Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from Zeeland East High School

2. Accepted and planning to enroll in a two or four-year accredited college or university

3. 3.5 cumulative GPA minimum

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Leadership and service to Zeeland East High School and to the Zeeland community

3. Involvement in athletics


Peter and Huberdina Weller Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Previous year's recipient or graduating senior from one of the following high schools: Black River, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Intention to pursue educational opportunities and a career in the area of horticulture or the biological sciences with an emphasis on botany

3. 3.0 cumulative GPA minimum

4. Able to demonstrate financial need. The page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount is required with the scholarship application.

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Demonstrated leadership and service to high school and community

3. Financial need


West Michigan Dental Scholarship

This scholarship is potentially renewable for one additional year.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating high school senior who has received a dental certificate from the OAISD Tech Center (Careerline Tech) and has successfully completed a dental office internship by mastering entry level skills

2. Continuing his/her studies in the dental field at any Michigan two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational technical school

Selection Criteria, in order of importance:

1. GPA in the dental program

2. Answer to the standard essay question

David Wiersema Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from one of the following high schools: Black River, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Enrolling at any two or four-year accredited post-secondary college, university or vocational/technical school.

3. One of the two required recommendations must come from applicant's golf coach

4. Varsity golfer

Selection Criteria:

1. Golf coach's recommendation

2. 300 word or less essay answering this question: How have you grown since you have been involved in golf?


Mark Winia Memorial Soccer Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from the following schools: Black River, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland Public, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West

2. Club or varsity soccer participant

3. One of the two required recommendations must come from the applicant's club or school soccer coach.

4. 2.5 cumulative GPA minimum

Selection Criteria:

1. Academic achievement

2. Recommendation of applicant's club or school soccer coach

3. High involvement in other soccer activities such as coaching and refereeing

4. Financial need may be a consideration. Applicants are encouraged to supply the page of Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount.


Zeeland Rotary – Donald Morgan Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Residing in the Zeeland Public School District. Students not have to attend Zeeland Public Schools in order to be eligible.

2. Enrolling in a two or four-year accredited college or university or vocational/technical school

Selection Criteria:

1. Record of volunteer service to the Zeeland community consistent with the Rotary's motto of “Service Above Self” with multiple organizations

2. 300 word answer to this question:  High school prepares you for college and a career but not necessarily for life. What else in your experience has prepared you for a life you want? How so?


Agnes Zuverink-Norman Nursing Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Graduating from the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West.

2. Accepted and enrolling in an accredited nursing program, leading to a career as a registered nurse
