Scholarship Guidelines for 2010
The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area awards over $150,000 in scholarships each year to more than 100 students to attend schools of higher education throughout the nation. The scholarships are possible thanks to the generosity of many local individuals, families, and businesses who have created permanent endowments at The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area to further others' education.
The Foundation administers various scholarships, each with unique criteria. Each scholarship and the corresponding criteria are outlined in the links below. Please review the criteria carefully. Unless otherwise noted in the criteria, applicants must use the Foundation's standard scholarship application. Students must submit an application for each scholarship for which they are eligible.
Completed applications must be submitted to your high school guidance office. Guidance officers will provide the application materials and an official transcript to the Foundation on April 1st 2010. Please check with your counseling office for their internal deadline. Three scholarships have earlier deadlines. Applications for the J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship, the Latin Americans United for Progress Dream Scholarship, and the University of Michigan Club of Holland Scholarship are due March 15th.
Students are eligible to apply for scholarships that are competitive among all area schools or competitive among students from a specific school. Those interested in applying should review the links for both the school you attend and the All Area Schools link.Competitive among the following schools:
Black River, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High School, and Zeeland High School
The Scholarship Committee will have no fewer than five (5) members and will include at least one Board member, the Executive Director of the Foundation and the Program Director. In selecting non Board members, consideration will be given to persons having expertise in the fields of education and youth programs.
J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship Fund
Bouws Scholarship Applicaitons are due MARCH 15th
The J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to college or college-bound students who are employed (or whose parents are employed) with Russ' Restaurants (Holland, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Timberwood, and Grand Rapids).
Students must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a college or university within Michigan and:
- Hold a high school GPA of 2.0 or better
- Exhibit a record of extra curricular community interests and activities
- Demonstrate financial need
Applications for this scholarship are available through the Russ' Restaurants' Administrative Offices, 390 E. 8th Street, Holland MI 49423.
Careerline Tech Center Scholarship
The Careerline Tech Center scholarship awards scholarships to students who have excelled in their coursework at the tech center and are interested in pursuing a higher education.
Applications are available through the Careerline Tech Center.
Jessie F. Dalman Scholarship
The Jessie F. Dalman Scholarship Fund was developed to honor young women who have achieved academic excellence and a record of community involvement. Two $500 scholarships are awarded to female applicants from any of the following schools: Black River, Holland Public Schools, Holland Christian High School, Hudsonville High School, Unity High School, West Ottawa High Schools, and Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities
- Leadership in student and class government and extra curricular activities
Fifth Third Bank Minority Scholarship
The Fifth Third Bank Minority Scholarship awards two $600 scholarships to graduating seniors who are a racial/ethnic minority and a first generation college bound student. Applications are accepted from Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High Schools or Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic scores of 2.5 or higher
- Racial or ethnic minority status
- First generation college student
- Promise for the future
Kaminski Family Scholarship
The Kaminski Family Scholarship awards four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors who participate in the activities of one of the following youth agencies, Barnabas Ministries, Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Advocacy Center, and Urban Youth Ministries. Interested applicants are asked to seek the support of their mentor or counselor from one of the above named organizations in completing the application.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic record demonstrating continuous improvement
- Desire to attempt higher education
Lakeshore United Soccer Club Scholarship
The Lakeshore United Soccer Club scholarship awards $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who have participated in Lakeshore United Soccer Club, USA Soccer, and/or West Michigan Fire for a minimum of four years.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Participation in Lakeshore United Soccer Club, USA Soccer, and/or West Michigan Fire for a minimum of four years
- High involvement in other soccer activities such as coaching and refereeing
- Academic success as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 2.5
- Financial need is a consideration
- Applications must include a letter of recommendation from either a club or school soccer coach
Latin Americans United for Progress Dream Scholarship
LAUP Scholarship Applications are due March 15
The LAUP Dream Scholarship awards one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior of Hispanic origin from Black River, Holland High School, the West Ottawa High Schools, and the Zeeland High Schools. Applicants to the LAUP scholarship may also be considered for other scholarships administered directly by LAUP.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Financial need
- Academic excellence as measured by the student’s grade point average
- Involvement in school and community activities
- The strength of a student’s course load
- Essay question: Include a statement of your career and personal goals as well as a description of an aspect of Hispanic culture that is important to you
Samuel Meengs Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in memory of Samuel Meengs, a Hope College student and an active member of the Holland and Zeeland community. This scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Black River, Calvary Baptist, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools, or Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 4.0 and an ACT score of at least 27;
- A record of community service and extra curricular activities,
- Involvement in high school sports, music, or the arts and,
- The strength of a student’s course load
- Acceptance and intention to attend Hope College.
Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship
The Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that assists children of eligible employees of ODL, Inc. who are well-qualified students who will be pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree. Margaret Munson Memorial Scholarship
This memorial scholarship awards scholarships to seniors from Black River, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools or Zeeland High Schools who plan to enroll at Michigan State University in the elementary education program.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance as measured be a high school GPA of 3.0
- Strong interest in and involvement in elementary education
- Acceptance into Michigan State University in elementary education
Neydon Scholarship for Children of Widows
The Neydon Scholarship Fund for Children of Widows has been established for the purpose of providing a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior at Black River, Holland Christian, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools, or Zeeland High Schools who seeks educational opportunities beyond high school and is a child of a widowed mother.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Admirable character recognized by teachers or counselors within the high school and community organizations
- Financial need
- Preference will be given to those students who are not selected to receive other types of scholarships, particularly full scholarships
Brenda and Robert Soeters Family Scholarship
The Brenda and Robert Soeters Family Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Black River, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools or Zeeland High Schools who plans to enroll in a two or four year accredited program in a public or private college within Michigan.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by a high school minimum 3.0 GPA
- Strong record of service in applicant’s church and community
- Promise of success in the recipient’s field of study
- Financial need is of prime consideration
Shelley Speet-Mills Creative Arts Scholarship
The Shelley Speet-Mills Creative Arts Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Black River, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools and Zeeland High Schools with plans to pursue a career in the arts.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by a high school minimum 3.0 GPA
- Strong interest and involvement in high school arts program
- Recommendation from the high school art teacher
- Financial need
The University of Michigan Club of Holland Scholarship
University of Michigan Club Scholarship Applications are due March 15
The University of Michigan Club of Holland scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to a student planning to attend the University of Michigan. Applications are accepted from Black River, Calvary Christian, Fennville High School, Hamilton High School, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, Saugatuck High School, West Ottawa High Schools and Zeeland High Schools. Applicants for this scholarship may also be considered for scholarships administered directly by the University of Michigan Club of Holland.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Acceptance at the University of Michigan for the upcoming fall semester
- High achievement on GPA, ACT and SAT
- Leadership and service to area high school
- Essay: Please explain why University of Michigan is your first choice and your educational goals and intended major
Ted Vanden Bosch Scholarship Fund for Children of Firefighters, Police Officers, and Rescue Personnel
The Vanden Bosch Scholarship awards scholarships to graduating seniors from the greater Holland/Zeeland Area, including Hamilton High School. Applicants must be children of firefighters, police officers, or rescue personnel.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- Record of community service in addition to leadership positions in extra curricular activities
- Financial need
- Special consideration will be given to candidates interested in pursuing a degree in the sciences
Wagner Catholic Scholarship
The Wagner Catholic Scholarship is available to graduating seniors who are members of a local Roman Catholic Church (Our Lady of the Lake or St. Francis de Sales) and reside in the service area of The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. This scholarship is potentially renewable provided that the fund has sufficient earnings for up to $10,000 over a four year period for students pursuing a degree from a Roman Catholic College or University. Consideration may be given to a student considering Hope College or University of Michigan.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by high school G.P.A., rank in class and national test scores
- Financial need is a consideration, but not an absolute requirement
- Exceptional leadership in high school activities within the limits of employment requirements
- High service record in church and community
- Show promise of outstanding leadership and scholarship
Selection will be determined by a scholarship selection committee composed of representatives from education and each of the local parishes.
Agnes Zuverink-Norman Nursing Scholarship
The memorial scholarship provides two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from the Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High Schools or Zeeland High Schools who are accepted into an accredited nursing program, leading to a career as a registered nurse.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance as measured by GPA and college entrance exams
- Passion to pursue a nursing career
- Financial need
Exclusively for Black River High School
Unless otherwise noted, applicants for these scholarships will be reviewed and selected by the high school guidance office.
Brooks Family Minority Scholarship Fund
The Brooks Family Minority Scholarship Fund was established to celebrate the diversity of the Holland community. This scholarship is a renewable scholarship for eight consecutive semesters in progressive amounts of $1,000 in the first year, $2,000 in the second year, $3,000 in the third year and $4,000 in the fourth year. Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from Black River or Holland High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Permanent resident of the City of Holland for the last three years
- Racial or ethnic minority
- U.S. Citizenship
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA or ACT composite score of 20 or higher
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Financial need
Applicants will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
Ian Guarr Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship, established in memory of Ian Guarr, is awarded to a graduating Black River Public School Senior who demonstrates an avid interest and proficiency in music, writing or mathematics. The scholarship will award up to $5,200 to the selected recipient over a four year period; $1,000 the first year, $1,200 the second year, $1,400 the third year, and $1,600 the fourth year.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Demonstration of an avid interest and proficiency in music, writing, or mathematics during their studies at Black River. Candidates do not necessarily need to pursue these fields in college.
- Academic success as demonstrated by a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
- U.S. Citizenship
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA orhigher
- Leadership and service to Black River High School and the Holland/Zeeland community
- Financial need
- Enrollment in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university
Chris Martin Memorial Art Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Christian Martin who attended Black River Public School from 1997 to 1999. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Black River student who shows commitment and an interest in learning in the visual arts.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Candidates must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university or a technical / vocational training center. It is not necessary that candidates be planning to pursue a degree or career in the visual arts
- Candidates must demonstrate an interest and proficiency in the visual arts. They need not be top academic performers in the visual arts or other school curricula but, relative to the visual arts, they must show strong commitment, a genuine interest in learning and continuous improvement of artistic skills
- Candidates must be in good standing in their school and in the community and exemplify the characteristics of citizenship reflective of Black River Public School
Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation
The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
Exclusively for Holland Christian High School
Unless otherwise noted, applicants for these scholarships will be reviewed and selected by the high school guidance office.
Roger and Louise Brinks Holland Christian Schools Scholarship
This scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Holland Christian High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Financial need is a consideration, but not an absolute requirement
- Acceptance to a two or four year program of an accredited higher educational institution
Martin J. Dykstra Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Martin J. Dykstra Memorial Scholarship Fund awards one $500 scholarship to a Holland Christian High School graduating senior who plans to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program in business at a college or university.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Interest in a degree in business
John T. and Esther M. Hoogland Educational Scholarship The John T. and Esther M. Hoogland Educational Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Holland Christian High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Financial need
Karri B. and David E. Jasperse Scholarship
The David and Karrie Jasperse Scholarship Fund awards a $750 scholarship to a Holland Christian High School or Holland High School graduating senior who plans to enroll in a bachelors degree program in mathematics, science or engineering in a public college or university within Michigan.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Enrollment in a public Michigan college or university in a mathematics, science or engineering program
- Financial need is also a consideration
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
Dr. J.H. Kamps/Louis Roberts Speech Award
The Dr. John H. Kamps Scholarship provides a $100 scholarship to a female and a male student from each of the Zeeland High Schools and Holland Christian High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic scores of 2.5 or higher
- High level of involvement in speech, drama and/or English classes in high school
- A recommendation from the English and/or Communications Department
Marcia K. and Arlyn J. Lanting Family Scholarship
Marcia K. and Arlyn J. Lanting Scholarship Fund awards two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Holland Christian High School who plan to enter a career in Christian service. This service could take many forms and include Christian ministry, Christian youth work or Biblical studies.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Involvement in religious education program
- Enrollment in a degree program involving Christian ministry
- Exceptional character and leadership and a desire to make a difference in our culture
- Financial need a consideration but not a requirement
Shawn D. Wiersma Memorial Scholarship
The Wiersma Memorial Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Holland Christian High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance as measured by GPA and college entrance exams
- Record of community activities in addition to exceptional performance in church, school and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future, including being a well rounded athlete and possessing a love of outdoors
- Acceptance to a two or four year program of an accredited higher educational institution
- Financial need is a consideration but not a requirment
Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation
The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
Exclusively for Holland High School
Unless otherwise noted, applicants for these scholarships will be reviewed and selected by the high school guidance office.
Brooks Family Minority Scholarship
The Brooks Family Minority Scholarship was established to celebrate the diversity of the Holland community. This scholarship established in memory of Anne Dirkse awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from either Holland High School or West Ottawa High School who demonstrates a passion for a nursing career.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrollment in a 2 or four year accredited college or university in Michigan
- Academic success as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA or higher
- Leadership and service to the Holland/Zeeland community
- Financial need
- A passion for a career in nursing
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
Karri B. and David E. Jasperse Scholarship
The David and Karrie Jasperse Scholarship Fund awards a $750 scholarship to a Holland Christian High School or Holland High School graduating senior who plans to enroll in a bachelors degree program in mathematics, science or engineering in a public college or university within Michigan.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Enrollment in a public Michigan college or university in a mathematics, science or engineering program
- Financial need is also a consideration
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
Donald J. & Lileeth Brouwer Van Ark Scholarship
The Donald and Lileeth Brouwer Van Ark Scholarship awards three $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Holland High School who are enrolled in a four-year degree program in education/teaching.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance as demonstrated by a 2.7 GPA or higher
- Acceptance into an accredited four year college or university in the Education program
- Demonstration of hard work towards academic, maximizing abilities
- Financial need
Margaret VanVyven Music Scholarship
This memorial scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Holland High School who plans to enroll in a two or four year university leading to a career in music either as a teacher or as a performer.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- Dedication and involvement in the high school music program
- Recommendation from the high school music department
- Intention to pursue a career in music, either as a teacher of instrumental or vocal music or as a performer of music
- Financial need
Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation
The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
Exclusively for West Ottawa High School
Unless otherwise noted, applicants for these scholarships will be reviewed and selected by the high school guidance office.
Anne E. Dirkse Memorial Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship established in memory of Anne Dirkse awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from either Holland High School or West Ottawa High School who demonstrates a passion for a nursing career.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrollment in a 2 or four year accredited college or university in Michigan
- Academic success as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA or higher
- Leadership and service to the Holland/Zeeland community
- Financial need
- A passion for a career in nursing
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
West Ottawa Class of 1999
The Class of 1999 established this scholarship to award a $500 scholarship to graduating seniors from West Ottawa interested in pursuing a higher education in a two or four year accredited college or university.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance as measured by high school GPA, rank in class and national test scores
- Demonstrated leadership and service to high school and community
- Contributions to Class and West Ottawa Schools
Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation
The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
Exclusively for Zeeland High School
Unless otherwise noted, applicants for these scholarships will be reviewed and selected by the high school guidance office.
Thomas and Susan Den Herder Education Scholarship
The Den Herder Education Scholarship recognizes and provides financial assistance to a graduating Zeeland East or Zeeland West High School senior who intends to pursue a degree in special education or general education. This renewable scholarship will award the selected recipient up to $2,500 over a four year period; $250 the first year, $500 the second year, $750 the third year, and $1,000 the fourth year.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must be planning to enroll in a 4 year accredited college or university in Michigan and to pursue a degree in special education or general education.
- Candidates must demonstrate academic success by having a high school GPA of 3.2 or higher.
- Candidates’ extra curricular and volunteer activities should demonstrate a strong interest in education.
Justin (Jup) Elhart Memorial Scholarship
The Justin Elhart Memorial Scholarship awards one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Zeeland East High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Applicants should demonstrate improvements academically and in personal traits over four years
- A caring attitude for others
- A high level of involvement in community, school, or work
Scholarship selection is made be the scholarship selection committee of the Zeeland Rotary.
Pamela Elhart Memorial Scholarship
The Pamela Elhart Memorial Scholarship awards a scholarship to a graduating senior from either of the Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Applicants should demonstrate improvements academically and in personal traits over four years
- A caring attitude for others
- A high level of involvement in community, school, or work
Scholarship selection is made be the scholarship selection committee of the Zeeland Rotary.
Dr. J.H. Kamps/Louis Roberts Speech Award
The Dr. John H. Kamps Scholarship provides a $100 scholarship to a female and a male student from each of the Zeeland High Schools and Holland Christian High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic scores of 2.5 or higher
- High level of involvement in speech, drama and/or English classes in high school
- A recommendation from the English and/or Communications Department
Catherine Bosch Wasson Family Scholarship
This scholarship, established in honor of Catherine Bosch Wasson, awards one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Zeeland East High School who excels academically and demonstrates a commitment to the Zeeland community.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Enrollment in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university
- Academic success by having and maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout high school.
- Leadership and service to Zeeland East High School and to the Zeeland community.
- Of lesser consideration, is a student's involvement in athletics
Gene Kraai Memorial Scholarship
The Gene Kraai Memorial Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from the Zeeland EAST High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Participation for at least three years in any single sport having earned a varsity letter
- Demonstration of growth in their athletic performances
- Caring attitude toward students and staff
Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation
The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
- A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
Scholarships Available to Students outside the Holland/Zeeland Area
J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship Fund
Bouws Scholarship Applications are due March 15
The J. Russel and Julia Bouws Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to college or college-bound students who are employed (or whose parents are employed) with Russ' Restaurants (Holland, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Timberwood, and Grand Rapids).
Students must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a college or university within Michigan and:
- Hold a high school GPA of 2.0 or better
- Exhibit a record of extra curricular community interests and activities
- Demonstrate financial need
Applications for this scholarship are available through the Russ' Restaurants' Administrative Offices, 390 E. 8th Street, Holland MI 49423.
Roger and Louise Brinks Elementary Education Scholarship
This memorial scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Hamilton High School interested in pursuing a degree in elementary education.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by high school minimum 3.0 GPA
- Record of community activities in addition to exceptional performance in school and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
- Applicants must be accepted to an accredited higher educational institution majoring in elementary education
- Financial need
- Scholarship selection is determined by the high school guidance office with the administration
Careerline Tech Center Scholarship
The Careerline Tech Center scholarship awards scholarships to students who have excelled in their coursework at the tech center and are interested in pursuing a higher education.
Applications are available through the Careerline Tech Center.
Jessie F. Dalman Scholarship
The Jessie F. Dalman Scholarship Fund was developed to honor young women who have achieved academic excellence and a record of community involvement. Two $500 scholarships are awarded to female applicants from any of the following schools: Black River, Holland Public Schools, Holland Christian High School, Hudsonville High School, Unity High School, West Ottawa High Schools, and Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- A record of community activities
- Leadership in student and class government and extra curricular activities
Samuel Meengs Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in memory of Samuel Meengs, a Hope College student and an active member of the Holland and Zeeland community. This scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Black River, Calvary Baptist, Holland Christian High School, Holland High School, West Ottawa High Schools, or Zeeland High Schools.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 4.0 and an ACT score of at least 27;
- A record of community service and extra curricular activities,
- Involvement in high school sports, music, or the arts and,
- The strength of a student’s course load
- Acceptance and intention to attend Hope College.
Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship
The Karen and Larry Mulder Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that assists children of eligible employees of ODL, Inc. who are well-qualified students who will be pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree. The University of Michigan Club of Holland Scholarship
University of Michigan Club Scholarship Applications are due March 15
The University of Michigan Club of Holland scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to a student planning to attend the University of Michigan. Applications are accepted from Black River, Calvary Christian, Fennville High School, Hamilton High School, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, Saugatuck High School, West Ottawa High Schools and Zeeland High Schools. Applicants for this scholarship may also be considered for scholarships administered directly by the University of Michigan Club of Holland.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Acceptance at the University of Michigan for the upcoming fall semester
- High achievement on GPA, ACT and SAT
- Leadership and service to area high school
- Essay: Please explain why University of Michigan is your first choice and your educational goals and intended major
Ted Vanden Bosch Scholarship Fund for Children of Firefighters, Police Officers, and Rescue Personnel
The Vanden Bosch Scholarship awards scholarships to graduating seniors from the greater Holland/Zeeland Area, including Hamilton High School. Applicants must be children of firefighters, police officers, or rescue personnel.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- Record of community service in addition to leadership positions in extra curricular activities
- Financial need
- Special consideration will be given to candidates interested in pursuing a degree in the sciences
Patricia K. Winchester Vanderbilt Scholarship
This memorial scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of the following high schools, Caledonia High School, Hamilton High School, and Hudsonville High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Academic performance in English literature and other subjects related to English
- Students with admirable character and demonstrated leadership abilities
- Participation in community activities, church activities and other volunteer work
- Enrollment in a 2 or 4 year college or university with plans to go into English or related subject matter
- Financial need
Wagner Catholic Scholarship
The Wagner Catholic Scholarship is available to graduating seniors who are members of a local Roman Catholic Church (Our Lady of the Lake or St. Francis de Sales) and reside in the service area of The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. This scholarship is potentially renewable provided that the fund has sufficient earnings for up to $10,000 over a four year period for students pursuing a degree from a Roman Catholic College or University. Consideration may be given to a student considering Hope College or University of Michigan.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- High academic performance as demonstrated by high school G.P.A., rank in class and national test scores
- Financial need is a consideration, but not an absolute requirement
- Exceptional leadership in high school activities within the limits of employment requirements
- High service record in church and community
- Show promise of outstanding leadership and scholarship
Selection will be determined by a scholarship selection committee composed of representatives from education and each of the local parishes.
